“No One Told Me About Menopause”

I was on a call with a couple in their 50s when the husband suddenly blurted out, “And no one told me about menopause.” His wife was in the thick of it, dealing with debilitating symptoms that impacted their connection, intimacy, communication, and day-to-day dynamics. Menopause is a challenging phase for many women, but it’s important to remember that women aren’t the only ones who experience hormone changes that affect a marriage. Men can go through “andropause,” where their testosterone levels drop, affecting their physical intimacy drive, mood, fat distribution, energy levels, concentration, and more.

How can you determine if these hormonal changes are impacting your marriage? Start by noting how you feel physically. Ladies, pay attention to any changes in your cycle. Observe your mood, energy levels, intimacy drive, and whether you’re experiencing brain fog or emotional changes. These signs can indicate it’s time to see your doctor, get some tests done, and determine if you need treatment.

As a relationship coach, I always ask people over 40 about these issues because hormonal changes can dramatically alter the dynamics of a marriage. We want to ensure that help is received if needed or rule out hormonal changes so we can focus on the actual marriage issues and work on shifting them. By addressing these underlying health concerns, couples can better understand and navigate the challenges they face, leading to a stronger, more connected relationship.
